A person may hear God and get guidance through a dream, a vision or an audible voice. However, these should be tested carefully, as not all guidance come from God and could be their own mind deceiving them. (people are selfish) I think people should seek guidance from God through the Scriptures, since many people have been led astray by following dreams, prophecies and similar experiences.
1 Thessalonians 5:20- Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good.
1 John 4:1- Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
